Introduction Refers to inflammation of the optic nerve within the eye May be secondary to infection viral tuberculosis syphilis multiple sclerosis vasculitis glaucoma metastasis methanol meningitis ethamabutol Presentation Symptoms unilateral loss of vision pain with eye movement Evaluation Fundoscopic exam optic disc appears swollen with peripapillary hemorrhages If patient is older than 60, biopsy temporal artery to rule out temporal arteritis Differential Temporal arteritis, retrobulbar neuritis Treatment Medical IV and oral corticosteroids
