  •  PapilledemaA 58-year-old man presents with transient vision loss in addition to severe headaches that are worst when he wakes up in the morning. On retinal exam swelling of the optic disc is note. A CT scan of the head reveals a large intracranial mass.

  • Swelling of the optic disc due to increased intracranial pressure

Presentation
  • Symptoms
    • transient vision loss associated with changes in head position
      • worse with increased cerebral blood flow (e.g. supine, prone) and improved with standing
    • enlargement of the "blind spot"
    • headache
  • Physical exam
    • venous stasis
    • swollen optic disc with blurred margins
    • absence of a physiological cup
Treatment
  • Reduction in intracerebral pressure
