Introduction
  • Refers to inflammation of the optic nerve within the eye
  • May be secondary to
    • infection
      • viral
      • tuberculosis
      • syphilis
    • multiple sclerosis
    • vasculitis
    • glaucoma
    • metastasis
    • methanol
    • meningitis
    • ethamabutol
Presentation
  • Symptoms
    • unilateral loss of vision
    • pain with eye movement
Evaluation
  • Fundoscopic exam 
    • optic disc appears swollen with peripapillary hemorrhages
  • If patient is older than 60, biopsy temporal artery to rule out temporal arteritis
Differential
  • Temporal arteritis, retrobulbar neuritis
Treatment
  • Medical
    • IV and oral corticosteroids
