Introduction
  • Pathogenesis
    • transmission via respiratory droplets
    • virus has a reservoir in the respiratory tract
      • replicates in upper respiratory tract and regional lymph nodes
      • spreads to organs hematogenously
Presentation
  • Symptoms/Physical exam
    • parotitis
      • swollen/painful parotid glands
    • orchitis
      • painful inflammation of testes
Evaluation
  • Diagnose clinically or with serology
Differential
  •  Pleomorphic adenoma, sialolithiasis, lymphadenopathy
Treatment
  • Prevention
    • MMR vacine
      • Can be given to HIV+ patients
Complications
  • Infertility is rare complication
    • more likely after puberty
    • unilateral inflammation (most common) preserves fertility
  • Other complications include
    • asceptic meningitis
    • pancreatitis
