Introduction Pathogenesis transmission via respiratory droplets virus has a reservoir in the respiratory tract replicates in upper respiratory tract and regional lymph nodes spreads to organs hematogenously Presentation Symptoms/Physical exam parotitis swollen/painful parotid glands orchitis painful inflammation of testes Evaluation Diagnose clinically or with serology Differential Pleomorphic adenoma, sialolithiasis, lymphadenopathy Treatment Prevention MMR vacine Can be given to HIV+ patients Complications Infertility is rare complication more likely after puberty unilateral inflammation (most common) preserves fertility Other complications include asceptic meningitis pancreatitis
