Inflammatory Breast Carcinoma

Snap Shot
  • A 58-year-old women presents with a rapidly enlarging, painful breast mass. The overlying skin exhibits edema, warmth, erythema. There is non painful adenopathy in the ipsilateral axila.
Introduction
  • Most malignant type of breast cancer
  • Rare and accounts for less than 3% of the cases
  • Metastasis occurs early and prognosis is very poor
    • almost always widely metastatic at presentation
Presentation
  • Presents with redness and pain of breast and peau d'orange skin 
    • inflammatory presentation due to plugging of the dermal lymphatics
Differential
  • Must be distinguished from erysipelas  of the breast
Treatment
  • Mainstays of therapy is
    • radiation
    • hormone therapy
    • Chemotherapy 
  • Rarely resected surgically
