Submissive and clinging behavior is a prominent feature of dependent personality disorder. Dependent personality disorder is a Cluster C personality disorder. Patients have low self-confidence, an excessive need to be taken care of, and exhibit submissive and clinging behavior. To afflicted individuals, other people appear powerful, competent, and capable of providing a sense of security and support. Angstman et al. review the DSM-IV personality disorders. Dependent personality disorder is the least prevalent of the Cluster C personality disorders, with a prevalence of 0.6%. Recommended management includes reassurance and routine follow-up. Oleski et al. examined the relationship between Cluster C personality disorders and major depression using data from an epidemiological survey of 35,000 patients. They found that Cluster C personality disorders predisposed patients to major depression and were likely to exacerbate major depression symptoms.
